ISLAND OF KAPRIJE
The island of Kaprije is situated in the central part of the Sibenik archipelago, between the islands of Zmajan and Kakan. It's area is 6.97 sq km; and there are living there 130 inhabitants. The highest point of the island is Vela Glavica with its high of 132 m. The island vegetation is typical of that region of Dalmatia and comprises grass and bushes and very rare pine forests. Main occupation of inhabitants is: farming, viticulture, olive growing, fishing and of course tourism. There is only one settlement, Kaprije, which is situated on the south-western coast of the island. The hamlet of Medos on the north-eastern coast is occasionally populated by the inhabitants of Murter who have their lands there.
The first information about island was mentioned in the 15th century. From 1510 Kaprije was the shelter of the refugees from the mainland, who fled from the Turks. The history of the island is connected with one of the aristocratic family who in the 19th century owned the island.
